Shia Rebels Released The Yemeni government has begun releasing hundreds of northern Shia rebels as part of a peace deal. (BBC, 30 Dec 2010)

Storms Devastate USA Western USA is bearing the brunt of new winter storms, with heavy snow blanketing an area from New Mexico to Minnesota. United Airlines cancelled 32 flights from Denver Dec 30. Several cities suffered serious road closures, while a sudden blizzard combined with winds of up to 105km/h caused havoc in New Mexico. (BBC, 31 Dec 2010) A series of tornadoes in the south and mid-western US killed seven people and caused power failures for thousands in the region. (BBC, 1 Jan 2011)

Strike Against Blasphemy Law Changes A 24-hour strike organised by Sunni Muslim clerics took place across Pakistan to protest against possible changes to blasphemy laws. Rallies were staged in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta after Friday prayers. The government has distanced itself from a bill to change the law, which carries a mandatory death sentence for anyone who insults Islam. (BBC, 31 Dec 2010)

New Year Bomb Attack 21 people killed and 70 hurt in a suicide attack, at a New Year's Eve service at the al-Qiddissin Church in Egypt. Several hundred Christians later clashed with Muslims and police. (BBC, 1 Jan 2011)

Israeli President Guilty of Rape Israel's former President Moshe Katsav has been convicted of rape raping an employee in the 1990s when he was tourism minister and of later sexual offences while he was president. (BBC, 30 Dec 2010)

Ban on Scarves Ends The ban on headscarves at Turkish universities ended quietly when the government issued a statement saying it would support any student expelled or disciplined for covering her head. Now almost all universities across Turkey have abandoned the official prohibition on women wearing headscarves. Millions of Turkish women wear headscarves: it is estimated that at least 60% cover their heads. (BBC, 31 Dec 2010)
